After only two years in buisiness, Renaissance Floor In-Lays have disigned, constructed and installed this year’s runner-up residencial floor. The floor occulies the entrance to the home, which is a towers between the other elements of the house. Buildt 20 years ago by an apparent master craftsman ago by an appsrent master craftsman, the 9-foot, 8-inch radius tower isn’t off by more than one-sixteenth of an inch anywhere in the circle. Cut by hand, the sunburst pattern consists of 144 boards of Brazilian cherrywhich taper toward the center.

On the heels of his second-place Honor Award in last year’s Floor of The Year contest, Renaissance Floor In-Lays is still, as one voter put it “pushing to the limits of the scroll saw.”

The floor shown here sits in a Brazilian cherry floor in the home of a Los Gatos. Then winning floor is a Brazilian czerry parquet laid in chevron patter, with the 5-by7-foot medallion of Brazilan cherry, padouk, avodire, wemge, lacewood, pearwood, and walnut. The medallion sits in a hallway separating the two main living areas – and the piece’s symmetrical plying card motif means that the image looks the same from either direction.

In the 1996 Floor of The Year content, the work that won Renaissance Floor In-Lays another two trophies was commissioned for royalty- for a diplomatic room within one of the royal palace in thailand. Design with the Queen of Thailand in mind, for the Queen’s summer palace outside of Bankok, the winning floor teatures an ellips with a  centerpiece of orchids. The 8-by-14foot ellipse inlay is set within a field of santos mahogany. The full room, the grand entrance of the palace, was all installed by another American company and NWFA member Rode Bros. Flooring of Los angeles.

The orchid centerpiece itself is 32-by34 inches. It comprises 522 pieces, all hand cut from 12 different species: American cherry, American black walnut, bird’s eye maple, wenge, purpleheart, padok, avodire, carpetiam elm, santos mahogany, Honduras mahogany, Cuban mahogany, and grain pink ebony .
